The neighborhoods of Hudson Hill and Woodville are 2 of the lowest income neighborhoods in the city of Savannah, they are bound by industry and exist in a food desert. The people of these neighborhoods are working towards social and environmental renewal with the help of Harambee House, Healthy Savannah, the Chatham Environmental Forum (CEF), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Atlanta, Savannah Urban Garden Association (SUGA), and several other local initiatives. Working directly with the Harambee House, we designed solutions around revenue bringing endeavors for this struggling community. The amount of information already collected was unreal, unorganized and overwhelming. What started as a sustainable design project quickly became an exercise in relationship management with a keen focus on communication. We weaved ourselves into this uncomfortable space and began untying knots, making bows and moving forward. together. <img He taught me that "A brand is a contract of trust" and to create a brand that speaks to people, we have to speak to people ourselves. We learned his Verbal-Visual Framework method and applied that within Semantic Differential Methodology. I showed my work at the Mutation Craft fair, Bust Craftacular, Brooklyn Flea, Art Star Craft Bazaar, and the Renegade Craft Fair. For those events I hand-made about 150 plushie gold grill faced monsters called "Hood-Rats" Each monster was created with a different personality and sold for $10-45. Each grill was hand cast and painted providing a different snarl on each of them. Researching past events and focusing on case studies and working directly with disaster relief organizations, each member of our team designed a solution for a segment of post disaster response. I focused on schools and education and getting a "school house" quickly back into place so kids can still go to school and be together while their lives are being re-built. I went the direction of complete success and complete failure. Although this was an exercise is scenario planning, it helped to solidify my research processes and focuses on actionable results that are permeable in their creation when necessary. <img Through out the course of 10 weeks, we designed a "sustainability plan" for the public library of Rochester Illinois. In order to do so we had to understand what sustainable meant to the patrons of the library. We immersed ourselves in contextual inquiry, data collection, interior and exterior design, understanding and applying LEED certified improvements and ultimately delivering a plan that the employees, Envisioning a creative future through civic engagement Designing what's next for a town in need Spanning almost 40 weeks, this project focused on creating realistic deliverables for the thriving success of an industrial city trying to survive in a post-industrial context. The city of Dalton is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains in northwest GA, it boarders Chattanooga TN and is known as "The carpet capitol of the world" Almost all of the carpeting and flooring you've ever seen has most likely been designed and manufactured in the city of Dalton. There are 150+ carpet plants which employ 30k members of the community. The city has a colorful history that rivals most southern towns. In todays environmentally and conscious consumer market carpet is just not selling like it used to and the city of Dalton is fearing extinction. City Administrator, Ty Ross came to us asking for help.Throughout the 40 weeks, I became the project director and led the final phases in research, communication, presentation and design for our final deliverables.
